Help us change kids' lives

Unalayee strives through our wilderness backpacking programs to provide meaningful outdoor experiences to California youth from every social and economic background. It is our policy that we give every young person the chance to unplug and experience the out of doors, with special consideration for those who would not normally have the financial means to do so. Disadvantaged youth often have the most difficulty accessing outdoor recreation and quality environmental education programs because these opportunities are not available in their communities and they do not have the equipment to participate in or means of transportation to access such programs. Unalayee is dedicated to breaking this barrier for low-income youth and fighting childhood obesity and nature deficit disorder.
Without the generous donations of our community members and people like you we would not have been able to provide this experience and help so many youth to get outside and unplug for over 60 years.  Please help us continue to realize our mission by donating today. Camp Unalayee is a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation and your donation is tax deductible. Every dollar helps make a difference in a camper’s life.

Camp Unalayee serves youth from all economic, social, and racial backgrounds. We believe that ethnic, social, and economic diversity adds to our campers’ experience and we actively strive to include campers and staff from a wide range of backgrounds in our programs. This diversity strengthens their understanding of the world and themselves.  No child left inside!
Every Kid Gets to go to Camp!
Your donations will help kids like these attend summer camp!
We also believe that youth learn to work in a community and communicate better with both adults and their peers when they are surrounded by people from economic and social backgrounds different than their own. These youth bring these lessons and skills back from summer camp to their communities where they improve the lives of their families and community members. In this way Unalayee’s programs not only touch the lives of those that spend the summer in our wilderness basin, but hundreds more in the communities of those that participate in our programs. Fighting  problems such as childhood obesity and nature deficit disorder, go far beyond the individual; they need to be addressed in the community. As such, we make it a priority to make our programs accessible to low-income children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. In 2011 46% of our campers received some sort of financial assistance.  Thank you for helping us continue to provide this financial assistance to so many children.
We believe that when young people unplug, build their own fires, cook their own food, explore the woods with their peers, and sleep on the ground under the stars, as they have the opportunity to do in our summer camp programs, it changes something inside them. This process breaks down the preconceptions and misconceptions that young people have about themselves, others, and the out of doors.  It enables young people to build new ideas and friendships based upon self-discovered truths and teamwork.  From these discoveries they develop new and positive visions about the possibilities for their lives. These kind of experiences and life lessons, those that translate back to the kids’ lives in their local communities, are the core ideals that Unalayee was founded on, and that we strive to achieve with each and every camper.
Our campers have eventually gone on to careers in every field from environmental conservation to politics to academics and many other professional fields. Many of our alumni state that their time at Unalayee was a pivotal point in their self-discovery: defining who they were and putting them on the path to their future successful lives.
We not only accept monetary donations, but are also always looking for equipment and supply donations. If you have backpacking and outdoor equipment, craft supplies, food, or anything else that you would like to donate to our organization please contact us at friends@gocampu.com. Without the equipment and in-kind service donations we receive every year we would not be able to operate as we do. We are always in need of good quality backpacks and sleeping bags, art supplies, and medial supplies.

Donate Your Car in California

Donate Your Car in California

Have an old car taking up space in your driveway? Cars and trucks depreciate in value quickly. Fortunately, these aged vehicles can be valuable assets to a variety of charities. You can make a car donation in California to help your charity of choice continue helping others.
If you have an old vehicle in California, you can simply donate it. People donate their cars all the time in California in order to help local charities and to easily get the vehicle off of their hands. You don't have to look for a place to park your old vehicle long term. The Center for Car Donations will come to you to take your old car or truck away.

How Does The Center For Car Donations Turn Old Cars Into Funding For Charities?

What happens when you donate your car? Your car is repaired, if needed, and sold at an auction. The proceeds from the sale of your car are then sent to the charity of your choice. This is a great way for you to contribute to worthy causes rather than allowing your car to remain idle and useless.
Your car does not even need to be in working condition for you to be able to donate it. In some cases the Center for Car Donations will be able to tow your broken down vehicle. This saves you a lot of time and effort when deciding what to do with a car that no longer runs. Many people who own broken-down automobiles must pay a towing company to take their vehicles away. This makes donating your car a viable solution if you don't own a car that is currently operational.
In California, you don't even need the title to the vehicle. You do, of course, have to be the legal title owner. But if you donate your car in California through Center for Car Donations (www.centerforcardonations.com), they will provide a duplicate title form for you to sign.

Donate Car

The Donating Process

The process of donating your car to charity is simple: Call the charity and someone will come and pick up your vehicle, or tell you where to bring it. However, with so many charities to choose from and so many people trying to scam the innocent, picking the right organization is not always easy.

What to Do First

Before you hand over the keys to your car to a charity, the IRS advises that you:
  • Research the charity.
  • See if you will receive a tax benefit for your donation.
  • Look up the value of your car (however, you can only deduct the actual amount the charity sells your car for).
  • Ask if you, as a donor, have any other responsibilities.
In addition, you may want to consider:
  • How will your car be used?
  • Will the money from the sale of your car be used locally or outside of your community?
  • Which programs or services within the charity will receive funding from the sale?
  • What is the efficiency rating of the charity? (A lower rating means more of your donation goes toward administrative costs, not to the programs and services you want to support.)
For more information on this and tax-related matters, read the IRS's A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations.

Finding a Charity

Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details, which may help you make informed giving decisions. Be sure to visit the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area, if you are interested in local charities. Or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

Notice of Transfer

Be sure to visit our guide to Title Transfers to learn how to transfer the title over.

Tax Write-Off

The IRS has clamped down on how much you can write off on donated cars. No longer can you submit a vehicle's full value. Now, instead, you can only claim the amount for which it is sold. For example, if your vehicle has a Blue Book value of $1,600, but the charity only sells it for $725, you must submit the lower deduction.
Your charity must give you a deduction amount within 30 days of handing your car over, or, if it applies, within 30 days of it being sold. If you're not notified within this time span, call your charity. The amount will come in the form of a mailed letter. Use this as your receipt, or what the IRS calls your acknowledgment.
If the deduction exceeds the IRS's normal $500 limit, your acknowledgment must contain the following information:
  • Your name and taxpayer identification number.
  • The vehicle identification number.
  • The date of the contribution.
  • And one of the following:
    • ―A charity statement verifying that no goods or services were provided in return for your car donation.
    • ―A description and estimate of the value of goods or services, if any, exchanged for your donation.
    • ―A statement that goods and services provided by the charity consisted entirely of intangible religious benefits (if applicable).

Where to Donate

The choice is yours. But before donating, confirm that your charity of choice is recognized by the IRS. Otherwise, your deduction will be rejected. If in doubt, check the IRS's Publication 78. It lists qualified charities; religious organizations aren't listed, though they do qualify. Or, either contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.
If you're still undecided, Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details. Keep in mind, however, that not every charity listed here accepts car donations.

How to Cancel Plates and Tags

The laws for this vary by state. Some states require surrendering the vehicle's license plates to the DMV. Others require submitting a sold notice. And there are a few states that require no formal notification at all.
Check with your DMV for requirements.
